Brand Satellite renames and rebrands College Employers Scotland

Brand Satellite helps with the renaming and rebranding of College Employers Scotland

In an exciting change for the Colleges Scotland Employers’ Association, the organisation has rebranded and is now known as College Employers Scotland.

College Employers Scotland has its own distinct visual identity, website, and social media presence, separate from Colleges Scotland.

College Employers Scotland represents the employers’ views on national pay, terms and conditions for college staff and is the body through which the Scottish Government’s Policy of National Bargaining is delivered and implemented by employers in the college sector, in partnership with the trade unions (EIS-FELA, GMB, UNISON and UNITE).

The college sector in Scotland employs over 11,000 staff in wide-ranging roles and delivers education, skills, and training to around 240,000 students, 11,000 apprentices and 52,000 school pupils.

Brand Satellite’s brief was to:

  • Help the Colleges Scotland Employers’ Association land on a name that better describes what they are and what they do.
  • Create a visual identity that can be used “everywhere” – on business cards, on publications and presentations, online, on social media, and at events.
What we were trying to achieve with the proposal of College Employers Scotland was a name that is as easy to communicate as possible.

  • It ‘does what it says on the tin’.
  • Three words are easier to say/remember than four.
  • Thinking of it from a media point of view, if Shona Struthers is being interview, being introduced as “CEO of College Employers Scotland” will be much easier for viewers/listeners to understand and remember.
  • It sounds more modern and less formal.
  • It doesn’t require any apostrophes (which can be in danger of being put in the wrong place – Employer’s).
  • It aligns with the modern trend of naming organisations, with Scotland at the end: Zero Waste Scotland, Talent Scotland, Education Scotland and Colleges Scotland itself.
The multi-coloured sun icon portrays positivity and diversity, with each ray representing one of the 26 colleges. The branding of the organisation’s members is very different across the 26 colleges. By using the full-colour spectrum, the logo can fit alongside any individual college logo, whatever colours their branding uses.

The l’s of each word in the wordmark match the size of the rays from the icon.

“Brand Satellite were an enormous help in a major rebranding project. Working quickly and creatively, a range of brand options were developed and the final look and feel of our new organisation has been widely welcomed by stakeholders.”

explains Jenifer Johnston, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at Colleges Scotland.

“The best part of working with Giles is the true understanding he had of the brief and he enhanced our thinking about what our new brand could be. This saved us a lot of valuable time in the process and he helped us think out of the box when we needed to. We’re really grateful to what Brand Satellite brought to the process.”
