ABOUT ‘GOOD’ COMPANIES

There are pros and cons to running your own business. One of the pros is being able to choose who you work with.

I have always, in the back of my mind, wanted to work with ‘good’ companies.

I think this is an age thing.

When I was younger, I was happy to work on pretty much anything – from candy bars (Nestle) to oil companies (Esso). I was very proud of the work I did that made Lion Bar one of Nestle’s best-selling products.

Now – older and wiser – I want what I do to help people achieve something more meaningful.

A PURPOSE-DRIVEN FOCUS

It was during a recent new business call that I told my potential client that she sounded like the sort of ‘good ‘ business I like working with. After explaining what I meant by that, she said that didn’t come across on my website.

So, I have decided to correct that. I have decided to ‘nail my colours to the mast’ and say that I only want to work with ‘good’ companies.

From now on, I am looking to focus on working with purpose-driven small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Professor Colin Mayer from the University of Oxford succinctly summarises a purpose-driven business as one that has the aim of producing “profitable solutions to the problems of people and planet”.

A PASSION AND A WISH

My decision to focus on purpose-driven businesses comes from a passion and a wish.

A passion for wanting to help people achieve their dreams. And if the people I help share my passion for helping people, then we can focus our energies in the right places.

A wish that I could do more to help save this planet.

I do a lot of the things we, as individuals, can do – reduce, reuse, recycle, refill, make environmentally friendly choices whenever possible, purchase green energy contracts, and invest my pension in ESG funds.

What I can also do is use my knowledge and experience of brand creation, branding and brand communication to help those businesses that are making a big contribution to saving our planet. The more of them that can get their solutions in front of the right people, and persuade them with the right messages – the better.

WORKING WITH ‘GOOD’ BUSINESSES

I don’t particularly see this as ‘niching down’. I believe there are many, many businesses producing “profitable solutions to the problems of people”. I intend to help them communicate their ideas, philosophies, and ambitions in a way that will attract more customers and increase sales. It may be purpose first, but profit mustn’t be far behind!
